Stylish and fun to crochet, my Cotton Candy poncho is worked flat in one piece (no sewing!) and will add a pop of colour to your wardrobe.
I’ve designed it to be worn two ways – wear yours with a boat neckline and the pattern runs from side-to-side, change it to a V-neck and the stitch pattern runs in the opposite direction from top-to-bottom.
The poncho pattern is written in both UK crochet terms and US crochet terms in one size (small to 2XL).
The free pattern is here on the blog below or you can purchase a PDF in my Etsy and Ravelry stores.

Level
Easy – there is some shaping at the poncho hem. Increases are made by working two stitches in one stitch. Decreases are made by working two stitches together. This shaping is at the beginning and end of rows.

Supplies and Materials
- 5.5mm Crochet Hook (I use Clover)
- 500g / 1400 meters Aran/Worsted Weight yarn (I used Woolcraft Cotton Candy Shade 767)
- Tape Measure
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle
Yarn Choices
Although the Woolcraft yarn I used is chunky, it worked up more like an Aran/Worsted weight. If you want to use yarn from your stash, crochet a swatch to check your gauge and if needed, use my stitch gauge converter to adjust your stitches.
Woolcraft Cotton Candy is a budget chunky ombre yarn that is soft to the touch. Shade 767 is gorgeous with the mustard, blue and orange colours changing as you go.
Made from 97% Acrylic and 3% Polyamide, there is 280m on a 100g, great value for money!
This yarn can be washed at 30 degrees but can’t be tumbled dried.
Keep in mind that if you substitute the yarn, this may change the amount of yarn you need.

Gauge
With a 5.5mm hook:
UK 9 rows and 13 treble crochet = 10cm X 10cm
US 9 rows and 13 double crochet = 10cm X 10cm

These are the stitches you will need to be familiar with. If you need any help on how to work them, you’ll find detailed instructions in my crochet stitch library.

How the Pattern is Worked
When I designed my open-shoulder crochet poncho, the combination of stitches could be a bit difficult for beginners to get to grips with. I wanted this poncho design to be easy enough for beginners.
The construction is easy and uses basic crochet stitches. I wanted to add a technique so tapered the bottom of the crochet poncho.
If you need practise with increasing and decreasing stitches, this project is perfect for you.

Using treble (UK) / double (US) crochet and crossed stitches in repeating rows, this pattern works up in no time.
- Worked in rows from the bottom up in one piece.
- Chains are used to create the neck space before continuing to work on the other side.
Rows of increases are followed with rows without increases. Once a chain is made for the head space, the crochet poncho pattern free reverses.

Pattern Notes
- Chain 1 does not count as a stitch
- Chain 2 counts as a stitch
- Number of stitches for each row are denoted in brackets ie; (68 tr / 68 dc) = 68 treble crochet stitches / double crochet stitches
- Using a stitch marker at the ends of rows will help you place the stitch for the new row
- Increasing and decreasing is at the beginning and ends of rows. Rows increase or decrease by 4 stitches as indicated.

Etsy 5 star review from Sue 6th May 2024. “Well written pattern. Love it”

Etsy 5 star review from Catherine 18 Apr 2024. “Thank you for this fun and simple pattern. It was my first time making a garment with a collar and it wasn’t too hard with your instructions. I also enjoyed the row counter template.”

Etsy message from customer 11th April 2024. Text reads: I wanted to write a review when I was done making my poncho, but it must have taken me to long as it isn’t under my account any longer. I wanted to show my poncho. Your pattern was easy to follow. I did make it longer. I love that you can wear this poncho 2 different ways. I’m now making my daughter-in-law one in a different color! Bless you! Rose

Maybe I missed it but how much yarn is needed for different sizes?
Thanx in advance.
Hi Barbara, the poncho is one size and you’ll need 1400 meters/1532 yards. Shaz
