My beginner-friendly crochet pocket shawl is designed to keep you warm and snug whether you’re reading, watching your favourite show, or just in need of adding an extra layer of coziness.

With a simple yet striking combination of granny spike stitch and double crochet, my Coccinelle shawl alternates between texture and smooth rows, creating a lovely visual effect.

The rectangular shape is easy to work up and the pockets are cleverly integrated, crocheted directly onto the rectangle using the posts of the double crochet stitches. Once the pockets are worked in rows and seamed at the sides, you’ll have a cozy, functional shawl that’s as practical as it is beautiful.

I’ve chosen self-striping yarn and the colourway makes my shawl look vibrant and striking, with bold contrasts adding a playful and cozy charm. The dark pockets add a nice contrast to the bright pink and softer grey tones, really drawing attention to the functional yet stylish element of my design.

Yarn Choices

This sample is crocheted with Cygnet Boho Spirit in the Moonbeam colour.  I had no project in my mind when I bought it but I’m really glad it was in my stash – the colours and self-striping colour changes were perfect for this design of my pocket scarf!

This yarn is 100% premium acrylic and machine washable at 40 degrees.

If you choose to use this same roving yarn there are a couple of things I want to make you aware of.  Firstly, it can be a nightmare to unpick/frog so be aware before you start crocheting!  Secondly, the skeins aren’t always wound the same way and might have colours missing.   The total yards I used includes where I matched some colours.  I had one skein that had the darker pink missing and planned for it in the middle. I would recommend you gently have a look through the strands in your balls so that you can plan for where to use them in this design.

I’ve used a different yarn from my stash for the pockets. Depending on the way your balls are wound, you might like to continue using the Boho Spirit. I wanted the pockets to stand out as a feature crocheted in one colour, but using the same yarn still fits with the design.

Cygnet grades the weight of this yarn between #3 weight (DK) and #4 weight.  If you substitute the yarn and your gauge is different from that below, use my stitch gauge converter to make adjustments.  Gauge isn’t too critical for this shawl.

How the Crochet Pocket Shawl Pattern is Worked

This shawl is worked in one long rectangle.  The pockets are added after the rectangle has been crocheted.  There are no colour changes, you will only need to rejoin yarn when using a new ball of yarn.

I’ve used the granny spike stitch for 6 rows (my Faith vest pattern has instructions to help you work this stitch if you need it) alternating with 6 rows of double crochet.  I love how this works out with the self-striping yarn – the stitches really pop for the granny stitch!

There is no right side or wrong side as both sides are the same.

The pockets are worked with a 3mm hook (for a tighter tension) using double crochet stitches with a round of single crochet stitches to neaten the pocket edges.

The pockets may be worked differently to how you are used to.  Here’s a breakdown of how the pockets in this shawl pattern are worked:

1) The pockets are worked onto the shawl by using the posts of stitches.  Stitches are counted from either side of the shawl, placing stitch markers, and using the posts to single crochet across between the stitch markers.  Working the posts in this way gives a row of surface crochet stitches and secures the base of the pocket to the fabric. 

2) Rows of double crochet are then worked leaving a long tail.  The long tail is used to crochet a single crochet border all around the pocket (yarn is threaded through the single crochet stitches where the pocket is worked around the post stitches).

3) The side seams are sewn using the long tail.

Pattern Notes

• Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
• Multiples of 4 (+3).
• Chain 1 (pocket edging) does not count as a stitch.
• Chain 2 (double crochet rows on shawl and pockets) counts as a double crochet.
• Chain 3 (granny spike stitch) counts as a double crochet.
• Chain 4 (granny spike stitch) counts as a double crochet, chain one.
• Chain one spaces (granny spike stitch) counts as a stitch.
• I recommend joining a new ball of yarn at the end of a row.
• If you would like a longer shawl, work 6 extra rows of the granny spike stitch and if needed, 6 rows of double crochet.
• Make sure both pockets are worked on the same side of the shawl.
• If you would like larger pockets, measure less stitches from each side and work more rows.
• Leave a length of yarn approximately 130 inches at the top of the pockets for crocheting a border around the pocket and sewing side seams.
• Weave in ends as you go.
• Read the pattern through before you start to crochet.

On the RS, measure 2.5 inches from the bottom

Count 21 sts in from the right and place a st marker

Join yarn at right st marker
