There’s something truly special about crafting a handmade blanket for a precious little one, and I’m excited to share these free crochet patterns for baby blankets that will keep your baby warm and cozy.
In this collection, you’ll discover a wide choice of crochet designs which I’ve carefully selected for different tastes and skill levels.
Whether you’re an experienced crocheter or a beginner, you’ll find a pattern here for you. From classic and timeless blanket designs to whimsical and modern motifs, I’ve gathered a variety of free patterns to suit every style.
Baby afghans make great first crochet projects. Smaller in size compared to adult-sized blankets, baby afghans require less time, yarn, and effort to complete. If you’re a beginner, these projects are more manageable, especially if you don’t feel ready to commit to a larger project right away! I’ve got you covered with easy crochet baby blanket patterns.
If you’ve been crocheting for some time, you’ll find a project here to suit you too. If you have a yarn stash, a baby afghan is a great way to use up leftover yarn from previous projects. Mixing and matching colours and yarn types can result in a beautiful and eclectic piece.
As an experienced crocheter, you can complete a baby afghan relatively quickly, ideal for creating thoughtful and handmade gifts when you’re short on time, such as for baby showers or last-minute presents!

- Crochet Baby Blanket Frequently Asked Questions
I remember so clearly my favourite blanket from childhood. Crocheted by my mum, I took it with me everywhere. She had to snaffle it away to wash it because I wasn’t giving it up easily! When I was older and my blanket was really tatty, I hid it away because I wouldn’t let her throw it away. I remember how it felt against my skin and the comfort it gave me. It’s a wonderful memory and one I cherish. Maybe you have a similar memory too.
I’ve crocheted blankets for my son (now in his late 20’s) at his request.
He loves the latest blanket I designed for him, the Noughts and Crosses blanket. He says he’ll treasure it for ever.
There’s something magical about gifting handmade isn’t there!
How to Crochet a Baby Blanket
Want to design your own baby afghan crochet pattern?
Follow these 6 easy steps:
Step | Description |
1 | Choose the size of your crochet baby blanket (use the information in the FAQs to help you) |
2 | Choose your crochet stitch. The easiest to use is either double crochet (US single crochet) or treble crochet (US double crochet). You can be adventurous and try different stitches too! |
3 | Choose your yarn and corresponding crochet hook size. |
4 | Crochet a swatch at least 12.5cm/5” square. A swatch is a square piece of crocheted fabric that uses the yarn and stitch you’ve chosen. You will use your swatch to work out how many chains you need to make a baby blanket and how many rows you’ll need too. |
5 | Use your swatch to work out the maths. Find the width by using the formula (stitches per 10cm) x (width divided by 10cm) = number of stitches. Example: you have 12 stitches per 10cm and the finished size width of your blanket is 80cm. Divide 80cm by 10cm (which = 8). 12 x 8 = 96 stitches for the width. So you’ll need to chain 96 stitches to start your baby blanket. Repeat the above for the height. |
6 | Decide if you’re going to crochet a border. If you need inspiration, here’s some fab crochet borders and edgings. |
That’s it! You’re all set to crochet your first baby blanket.
If you’re short on time and just want a crochet project to go, have you considered a crochet baby blanket kit? You’ll get all the yarn as well as a pattern, saving you time AND money.
Before we move on to the patterns, I wanted to mention the safety of lacy blankets for babies. I have heard stories about babies getting their fingers and toes caught in the holes of a lacy pattern but that doesn’t mean you can’t use a lacy crochet baby blanket.
As babies grow, their risk of getting caught in the blanket decreases. Lacy blankets may be more suitable for older infants who have better motor control and are less likely to accidentally pull on the blanket’s stitches.
For safer sleep for your little one, follow the advice from The Lullaby Trust.
Ultimately, the choice of a lacy blanket for a baby depends on your comfort level and how you choose to use the blanket.

What type of yarn is best for baby blankets?
The best yarn has a fibre that is soft. It needs to be soft and not irritable against baby’s skin! When you’re looking for yarn specifically for a baby blanket, read the reviews to make sure it really is soft (and not just marketed as being soft).
For convenience, the yarn needs to be machine washable. Baby blankets are going to need a lot of washing and whether you’re gifting your blanket or it’s for yourself, new parents won’t have much time for handwashing accessories.
Another thing to consider is the season. Babies aren’t able to control their own body temperature so a wool mix blanket in the summer wouldn’t be suitable. Use breathable yarns such as cotton or merino mixes all year round.
Here are some favourite yarns for crocheting baby blankets:
Get that extra smooth chenille feel without the difficulty of working with chenille. Made from polyester with a velvety finish, Feels Like Butta works up easily. This Aran/Worsted yarn is available in rich block hues and a range of pastels perfect for babies.
Lion Brand Ice Cream is a lovely and soft sport weight yarn. The self-striping colourways are ideal for baby projects and it comes in cheerful, ice-cream inspired colours like lemon swirl, tutti frutti and cotton candy.
Bernat Baby Sport is a lightweight baby yarn with a subtle sheen. This 100% acrylic yarn stitches up with great definition and is available in a wide choice of soft shades. Bernat Baby yarns are Oeko-tex certified, and are tested for over 300 harmful substances and proven to be safe for your baby’s sensitive skin. Machine washable and dryable for easy care.
The weight, lustre and sheen of Caron Simply Soft was a clear favourite of crocheters. The drape makes it the right choice for blankets and throws. A premium acrylic yarn that delivers on the details, your finished blanket can be machine washed and a gentle tumble dry on low.
Sirdar Snuggly 100% Cotton DK is a premium yarn specially developed to retain its softness, shape and colour, wash after wash. Spun from 100% cotton fibre, in 17 gorgeous shades, this double knitting yarn is a great to work with and creates breathable baby blankets.
King Cole Comfort is a soft yet hard-wearing yarn that’s lovely to work with. It comes in a range of solid and print colours ideal for baby projects. It’s machine washable and tumble dryer safe for practicality.
- Stylecraft Naturals Bamboo Cotton
Stylecraft Naturals Bamboo and Cotton is a DK yarn which has a silky touch, exceptional stitch definition, a super soft handle and lovely drape. It offers a hint of luxury and is kind to sensitive skins. If you’re considering your carbon footprint, this yarn is vegan friendly.

What is the best crochet stitch for a baby blanket?
An even, medium tension crochet stitch that is lightweight rather than heavy is better for a baby blanket.
Unless your baby will supervised – for safety reasons – I would recommend you avoid a blanket that is worked totally in open stitches and make sure there are no delicate joins.
